29. Steeves; Oregon State Law provides for the protection of archaeological sites, resources and objects (see ORS 358.905 and 358.955) and American Indian burials (ORS 97.740 to 97.760) on both public (nonfederal) and private property. Similar laws provide legal protection to cultural sites and objects on lands now managed by Federal agencies, such as the USDA Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Federal historic preservation laws (36 CFR 296) were enacted to conserve cultural resources for the benefit of future generations. Specific laws prohibit the removal of any cultural object from federal lands, unless authorized by special permit by the State Historic Preservation Office in consultation with the Federal land manager.
