ILYA MARTINEZ studied at the Casals Conservatory in her native Puerto Rico and at L'Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. She has sung the major soprano roles in The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Cosi von Tutte, Don Pasquale, L'Elisir D'Amore, The Tales of Hoffman, La Boheme, La Rondine, Manon, Romeo et Juliette, Gianni Schicchi, Faust, I Pagliacci, La Traviata, Carmen, L'Amico Fritz, Simon Boccanegra, I Capuletti e I Montecchi, Herodiade, The Pearl Fishers, I Lombardi, Thais and Rusalka. In addition to the roles of Sonia in Merry Widow and Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus , she has created twelve roles in the genre of Spanish "Zarzuela." Ms. Martinez has performed with Opera de Puerto Rico, the Israel Vocal Arts Institute with the New Israeli Opera, Opera Delaware, West Coast Opera Theater, Rhode Island Summer Opera, Musical Theatre Association, Opera at the Academy, Opera de San Juan, Bell'Arte Opera Theatre and Opera in Concert. In oratorio and concert performances, she has recently sung the contemporary oratorio Bayoan by Roberto Sierra. Her debut at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center was in Orff's Carmina Burana. At the Teatro de Bellas Artes in Mexico, she sang both roles of Eve and Gabriel in The Creation with the State Symphony under the baton of Enrique Batiz and took part in Valle de Bravo's First Festival. Her latest CD recording, Apasionadamente, is available on the Equus label. |
